School is just about in session—vampire school, that is. Though really, the first trailer for Vampire Academy is more court intrigue than vamp academia. The new series from vampire masterminds Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre (The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Legacies) is based on Richelle Mead’s bestselling books about two best friends in the fraught world of vampire society.
The synopsis is vague:

Lissa, a Royal vampire, and her best friend and protector, Rose, navigate romance, class politics, and ancient magic at their boarding school for vampires. When a mysterious bond develops between the two friends, they must work together to decipher it, all while facing threats inside the gates and out, including the bloodthirsty and undead Strigoi.
But the melodrama is cranked all the way up in the trailer, which finds Lissa (Daniela Nieves) worrying that she’s the only thing standing between “this dominion” and “that fate” is her. Rose (Sisi Stringer), ever loyal, will look out for her by any means necessary—but she seems to have some distracting chemistry with her super shirtless trainer, Dimitri (Kieron Moore).
And then there are a bunch of scheming vampire grownups, which, wait, do vampires age? How are there teen vampires and adult vampires? Am I asking too many questions? Logic aside, it’s delightful to see J. August Richards (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), best known to many of us as Angel‘s Gunn, returning to the vampire fold.
Vampire Academy premieres on Peacock on September 15th.
